What is stress?

Stress is the feeling of mental or emotional pressure.

People deal with stress differently and your personality has a lot to do with how it affects you. Some people react well under pressure and see it as a challenge while others can get stressed or anxious if they are given too much responsibility.

Signs of stress

Stress can affect people in different ways.

Common signs include:

• Problems sleeping
• Sweating
• Loss of appetite
• Lack of concentration
• Anxious feelings
• Low self-esteem
• Irrational behaviour

Physical signs can also include:

• Headaches
• Muscle tension
• Pain and dizziness

How to manage stress

The most basic steps you can take to manage stress include learning to relax both mentally & physically, exercising regularly and making better use of your time.

If you don't know why you feel stressed or what is causing it, create a mood diary for a week.

Write down what you are doing, where you are, who you are with and what you were thinking when you start to feel stressed. You can also try rating your stress on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being completely relaxed and 10 being completely stressed.
